Yep done a response to the beeb. I started a similar thread some time ago but didn't have the RFL link which is invaluable.

Would like to voice my concerns over loss of local radio broadcasts- particularly rugby league news and sports programmes and commentary! Please reconsider some, if not all these programme cuts as they bring joy to many elderly or disabled people who would not be able to reach out for this information elsewhere. Its not even like there is a factually correct upto date red button service most of the time (bear in mind I work for the Digital switchover scheme helping the people I talk about here, and most of them do not know of, let alone know how to work red button services!!!!)

For this reason alone I implore you to reconsider, at least weekend and evening local area news, sports, reports and commentary. If this happens it would also mean less local identity and rivalry- this is always healthy and forges conversations and rival, but new friendships (mainly when playing against each other!)

Just spotted this on the BBC website. Seems odd that local radio is being cut when they are planning to launch all these local TV stations. I know it does say advertising will hopefully cover most of the cost but it would be interesting to know exactly how much the start up costs will be that are covered by the licence fee.

It would then be worth the cut of local radio stations sport coverage if it at least transfers to these local stations, also they may be available throughout freesat as they have localised bbc/itv stations? This is of course, only if they then cover the local sport coverage?????

Agree entirely. Have also contacted BBC, and filled in the questionaire. Hope it does some good, and is not just a process they are going through, and then turn round and say "We did ask people what they think, but got a poor response", as we will probably never know how many people voiced their concerns.

The only trouble is I cant see the local TV stations covering any live RL as the rights would remain with Sky. I would have thought the main plus point for the radio is that there was live commentary that people could listen to if they couldnt make the game. I cant see this being replicated on TV.
We may get a mid-week highlights show or phone-in of some description but this would not overcome the loss of live commentary in my opinion.

Done my bit.

Don't want to go back to the 1970's when all we had was the good man, Ron Marlor flying the flag for us, on Radio Manchester at 6.15pm on a Sunday.

Results and a few quick reports and that was it. 15 minutes is all we got.

Just had an eight page reply from Dave Watts (MP), a couple of the pages are from Helen Boaden, BBC Director of News, she is basicaly saying that BBC one and Childrens programs, and Radio 4 are being proctected but not molly coddled, as she put it, while local radio is being cut by 12%, she says that the weakness of local radio is the number of local station, this means the only place cuts can take place is among the staff, some station will be reduced by a massive 20%.
Local radio has 7 million weekly listeners, with all sorts of diverse programs corvering many topics, Rugby League being just one of these programs, coverage of our game on local radio is under threat, Helen Boaden also says that the BBC have plans to reduce spending on "local sports rights" now I wonder who will take the brunt of this reduced spending, here's hoping our local commercial radio take up the slack.

On the saints site today it seems as if they got more replys than they expected, so i think everyone who responded can take a bow.

BBC local radio stations in England have a collective average weekly audience of 7.25 million listeners, according to the latest official Rajar audience measurement figures for the third quarter of 2011.
Their total audience was up from 6.96 million a year earlier but about a million listeners down from its weekly reach of 8.26 million a decade ago

How do they work those figures out? I mean how do they know what programes I am listening to

On BBC news text tonight it says "BBC has been ordered to re-examine plans for cuts to local radio . Cuts would have a dispropotionate impact on the BBC's output and reputation".

We wait to see what happens!

Chris Patten (Lord Patten) who is now a big wig at the BBC was interviewed on the Today Program and said the BBC had got it wrong about Local Radio. He said BBC Local radio had it's own regional identity and gave Rugby League as an example of this. They do sometimes listen to the man or woman in the street.

Just had an email update-
Seems some things may not change, although the full report could be very boring, I have snipped the bit we aimed to stop them changing?!?

'On weekday evenings (7pm–10pm) all stations will come together for a new all-
England programme, with opt-outs for live sport and local news (as currently
provided).'
(can still see, given achoice locally, that they will still cock it up and show wendyball over any other sports- possibly just me thinking the way they normally shaft us?)

Yeh, I ploughed thru this as well and just before I started to lose the will to live I found the same bit as you. Does this mean that non-live RL will be axed? eg discussion progs etc?
