I think the stadium could force a decision on the old rail line, last I heard they where in parliament trying to get it opened .
I dont think they would as half of the line doesnt exist and they would probably have to re-lay the lines that do. also there are a few places along the line that has been redeveloped already. An example of this is clock face.

They are trying to get skelmersdale to liverpool re opened but this is seen as not necessary. So i dont think they will open a line to make a 20 second jurney. Coming from the other direction the rail bridge that crosses the existing line at just before junction doesnt exist acording to google.

I don't know if this has been said before......With the olympics taking place next year will SL be playing through them or will it stop for the two weeks of the games. Will we be starting the season two weeks early to do this? If we do our first SL game at our fantastic new stadium could be 2 weeks earlier than we thought

The line past the stadium went to St Helens Junction did it not! The line through Clock Face was from Widnes to Carr Mill junction not past the stadium. Skelmersdale is on the Wigan Kirkby line but there is no station at Skem so they might be trying to get one built even though it is nowhere near the centre of Skem.

Although you've probably steamed the buggers, I disagree. The St Helens - Runcorn Gap line is the one that goes past the New Stadium - past Sutton Oak, Junction, Clock Face and beyond to Widnes

Regarding Clock Face being redeveloped, so what? The only part of the line that could serve any function if re-opened is the section from Town to Junction. Beyond Clock Face, most of the old lines in Widnes are now roads.

I bow to your superior knowledge obviously the connections on the freight only Widnes to Wigan joining Shaw St to Wigan line at Carr Mill junction was what I remember in the 80's (1980's that is).:sowsuser:

just had a look in this morning, one big giant crane is already up and running, and I mean big, its got a lift running up the side of it, its come with a gang of roofers and is aleady lifting the roofing material.
Had a word with the lads doing the retaining wall they are going all along the back of the North stand with the wall apart from a couple of steps that are going in.
we definately need snaps of this crane.
Talking to the Saints groundsman at the PX end of the stadium he said big Mac is a regular visitor and that we are having pop-up sprinklers, they are also pouring concrete into the 1st floor and they are working during the night .

Well it definitely benefit people coming from St Helens junction. They could just stop the train on the line and they could watch the game from the comfort of the carriage through the gap at the north east corner.

Well it would make it an easier journey (only one change in Manchester) and from Warrington for that matter as they all go through Junction.

Would be nice to see a few rugby trains rolling in chocked full but I think it is probably far too expensive for the benefits it would bring the line is pretty messy

If a stop at the new station is viable it's definitely something that should be investigated.

it will be done through the night... the massive crane your on about is a mobile tower crane and they are not that massive, if you wanna see a massive crane wait till they lift the bridge sections.... as for the rail link i have a relative in the rail network and he said their something proposed but unsure what!!!! as for it being to expensive its not really as there has been a massive injecton of cash put into the rail infrastructure, and a complete relay can be done in 6-8wks now

Re the new line suggestion. Sadly i dont believe that this is going to occur. Options for improvement of the north west rail network were explored with in the Route Utilisation Study - RUS - published in 2007.

http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browseDirectory.aspx?dir=%5CRUS%20Documents%5CRout e%20Utilisation%20Strategies%5CNorth%20West&pageid=4449&root=%5CRUS%20Documents%5CRoute%20Utilisation%20St rategies

This makes no reference to the reopening of the line. Some of the recommendations in the RUS are taking place, and others are stalled due to lack of funding.

The way to get the route funded together with the station for the stadium and area is to build a robust business case. For a recent station i am familar with - Aylesbury Vale Parkway - this was funded by a grant fron the developer of new houses in the area, (it was a condition to get planning permission), a TOC who could see a commerical benefit from serving it -new users plus an additional time on the franchise, and by extending existing services a few miles (which came mainly free by reducing the turnaround time so no additional units were required).

The only bridge work for network rail in St Helens at present under the EMAFA project is one bridge removal which is currently out to tender. I'm not sure which bridge

The foot bridge I will try and find out tomorrow but I doubt it's end of may. Maybe June. The guy that runs the scheme is a chap called mark and the lanky lad Dave is the engineer. If I remember I'll ring them tomorrow and push stretch (dave)for some info. I keep forgettin to ring them as I work away.

It went form Central Station and beared left at the back of what is now Matalan. The over the bridge Peasley Cross Lane along the back of St Josephs Club and the back of Morrisons, under that bridge on Baxters Lane. It carried on over that little bridge on Lancots Lane and at the back of the Caldo Petrol Station to St Helens Junction.

Hope that helps young man

Bridge goes in October time. Piling crew start shortly. Temp supports are to go in middle of road so it can be bolted together and crane choice is still at design stage. I can't see the crane being that big personally.

It was me. I read the tesco wiki page and it said that all new tesco extra stores since 2005 i think, will have a mezzanine floor. When i did some research another site said that the original plans might not show a 2nd floor as it isnt a floor as such it hangs from the roof or on stilts. So tesco will either do it when they do the fitting or they will wait a bit and then do it like they did with the prescot store.

All I can say is what we were told at the planning stage. The Council/NWDA are taking care of the costs of cleaning up the site plus installing services and building the footbridge (c£10 million between them). The sale of KR plus directors' loans is financing the stadium build. At the time this information was shared, the value of KR was £8 million. Whether that is the final figure obtained by Saints or not I don't know. I've heard the overall figure for the stadium as being £25 million but that could just as easily include all the preparation work to the site and the services taken care of by the Council/NWDA.

I think its a bit deceptive, as when your close up its huge so there is more room that you would think and i would think that the concessions ets would be in the space under the stands rather than poking out the back.

See our old home every day, and its been depressing watching it come down. Ive spent a lot of years visiting KR through good and bad times. However, getting a couple of looks at the new stadium, and in particular the excellent photos on here, Im really changing my outlook. Without wanting to over dramatise it or make it sound like a bereavment or relationship breakup (tbh KR going is worse than a couple of them Ive had!) but I now feel Im moving on. Im now more excited about the prospect of the new rather than sad about seeing the last of the old. Thanks to all who put these photos on, this is a great thread thats really helping build up the excitement of moving in to what appears to be shaping up to be a fantastic new home.

Have to agree. Spent the last 3/4 hour looking at new and old stadiums whilst I'm at home. KR was depressing but the new ground looks the dogs danglies.

The North stand does look a little tight for space under the stand for bars toilets etc as it currenly stands unless it is going to be extended back?

From the plans the refreshments kiosks and toilets are not completely under the seating areas of the North Stand. By the looks of it the stand will come back a good bit further than just where the seats stop.

It's not dangerous if you stick to the path that goes most of the way up that road. I've been up there a number of times taking pictures almost right to the security office and no one has said anything. The reason i got stopped is because on the day i went some bollards which were plugging a gap in the perimeter fence had blown over.It wasnt far from the security office and a guard came over to tell me i wasnt supposed to be there and he hadnt realised the bollards were down.

Basically the stadium will be a bowl and no gaps but in two corners a scoreboard and the big screen will be there so no one will stand/sit in them corners.

Leaves it open for expansion if needed in the future

The old Tesco site is to be developed by Spen Hill developments, (Tesco), it will be an extension of Market street, along with the deveopement of KR and the building of the new Tesco Supermarket its what has got us our stadium.

If its a continuation of the town. Half of it will never open. It's terrible the amount of closed premises. I went out last night and was shocked to see the nelson and the Market closed. ( yes I'm showing age). Even busby's was closed. Will the old cinema building that Jeff pennington did ever open. I don't think he owns it now but it's a shame it's never been aired even. Sorry I've gone OT. Great to see the frame work of the ground nearly complete though.

Well, they will need to do something original with it because we can't keep town centre shops open as it is. If they just try and put more shops in there, especially if Langtree want to develop even more out of town shops near the stadium, it will go nowhere. They need to look at providing something in St Helens that isn't provided in Warrington or Wigan but that people want to use/go to.

Hmmm. The report suggests there is sufficient demand for more retail development and they have a list of potential interested clients. I can only think of one who'd do well in the tesco development and leave the car park in place and that would be primark. The problem is though it would take alot of trade out of the centre.

I think it would be great to have a section (where the tesco is now) where the away fans coaches could park.

Let's be honest, there isn't many places to eat and drink around the new stadium (apart from Burger King and KFC I suppose but people want fish and chips at games, not fast food like that) so this would drive custom into the town centre.

Does anyone know where the away coaches are being planned to park?

The old yates next door to the Running Horses always struck me as an ideal spot for a nandos with its proximity to the cinema and town centre - not sure though if it can be done over 2 floors?

It was Hollywood Bowl IIRC and as far as I know it closed down because it's turnover was too low. Not sure it's location helped but I could see a bowling alley near to the cinema and food outlets working quite well as a full-on leisure area for the town centre.

They could easily park up away coaches on the open section of the multi-story car park where the burger vans are for the car boot on a Sunday. Then just a stones throw from Town and a short walk across the new bridge to The Stadium as the multi is going to remain open for match day parking.

One of the ideas that was suggested to me a while ago was for the current Tesco carpark to be turned into a canal boat marina!.

In another time when the country wasn't so bankrupt as it is this would have been a great idea. Unfortunately I can't see the canal ever being reopened especially when the Council in their infinite wisdom keep putting more blockages in the way such as the fixed bridge rather than a canal swing bridge next to the Chamber of Commerce building and until the country recovers from it present state of collossus debt.

It really is a mix of old and new. The CAT stand, like you said, is an impressive stand. Standing on the old terraces opposite, getting dripped on through the old roof reminds me a lot of KR. If they can rebuild that stand too, it'll be one the of best Union grounds in the country

The Crumbie is next in line. In the original designs I saw, the Crumbie will eventually wrap around the Alliance and Leicester and the Pavillion End, although I believe there are some issues with the old Pavillion being listed, and the road there.

The aerial shots are great, but I think they will look even better when the turf is laid.

I believe it will be seed rather than turf but I know what you mean - a big swathe of green there and away we go. Can't wait.

I read somewhere a few years ago that our board went to a new stadium in S Wales to get ideas for our stadium. Can anyone else remember this and who's stadium was it.
I'd guess at Llanelli as their stadium is new.

Nah it was Llanelli Scarlets stadium. Few pics below of their stadium:

Ours is obviously on a slightly grander scale and slightly varied to it, but the idea is similar.

Some great comparison pics with the Warrington stadium from "the banned one" today on rlfans, really shows how much room the stands are going to have underneath compared to the size of the HJ, which isn't exactly cramped.

Love the aerial photo's too, hopefully they updated them every couple of months to completion

The CAT Stand at Welford Road is a thing of stadia beauty. Plans are in place to do the similar on the Crumbie Terrace.

I miss the old Next Stand, however.
Same company doing the saints footbridge that did the Cat stand.

What's with all the talk about union stadia?

I've seen the pictures on RlFans and I can't believe how close Tesco is to the stadium! It looks close from the roads outside, but seeing a close up is worrying. Will that gap be open for fans to walk through?

I've just seen the pictures myself, the gap looks wide enough to me.

How big is your backside? ;)
You can get a lorry through there quite easily so I'm sure it's plenty big enough for the fans.

Surely it will be open on match days, otherwise it's a big walk for North standers to get to and from the cafe/sports bar.
