Seeing as we have a thread devoted to the birth of the New Stadium, I thought it only fitting that we also say a fond farewell to the Old Lady as she gently bids goodbye to the St Helens' landscape.

As with the New Stadium thread, this thread will allow those who are not regularly in St Helens to follow the progress of Knowsley Road as she transforms into a new home, for many families.

Everyone is welcome to contribute their pictures to this thread but I do ask that they are your pictures, taken with your own camera. Please don't pinch any pictures from any other websites. (likewise, if you spot any of my pictures elsewhere, please let me know).

Goodbye, Knowsley Road.

It was widely anticipated that this was the final day for the Old Girl, everyone expected the bulldozers to arrive with venom on the first working day of 2011. With this in mind, I headed off late afternoon to catch her final sunset. Just wish I'd remembered my stepladders to shimmy up the wall and get a better view of the Popside...

A full ten days has passed and seemingly nothing has happened at KR. Then word spread quickly - a JCB was on site. As it turned out, they were collecting soil samples rather than flattening the place. Whilst I was there, the GPW signs were also removed from the front of the club.

All Sports, remember them? As we can see, something must be going on due to the doors and windows being open but it sure seemed eerily quiet.

I got a bit nostalgic too. Way back in the late 70s and early 80s, Monday after lunch at school meant everyone piled onto a coach, three to a seat, with a butch woman driver who took us off to Boundary Road baths for swimming lessons - which meant driving past Saints.

Why mention the driver? Because she seemed to take great pleasure in hitting the Dunriding Lane bridge at great speed (all the youngsters are now saying, bridge?). This means that one of my fondest memories of KR is seeing the place just seconds before being hurled violently out of my seat.

Nostalgia then took me to Doulton Street and the view of KR that meant it was Sunday, Dad's car was parked up and we were going to the match!

FIRE!

RedVee lit up late Thursday evening, KR was on fire! As it transpired, the Fire Service were indeed called to tackle a fire at KR late on Thursday evening but not knowing the extent of it, I headed down to KR on Friday morning wondering if my previous photos would be the last memory I had.

She was OK, for now, but the JCB was back in action.

A fantastic thread, thanks for the pictures.

I went up there the other day and found it a surreal experience now it is unoccupied.

The building is obviously intact but I couldn't help but feel that the spirit had left the place. Maybe a bit OTT but it wasnt totally unlike viewing a loved one's body before burial.

KR had its problems and was no longer fit for purpose, that much is obvious, but I'm still devastated that we won't be going back there. What a beautiful old place it was.

I pass the ground a couple of times each day. What you say about the ground 'losing its spirit' is exactly right.Even when it wasn't a matchday, there was plenty going on at the ground. Now it's derelict, empty and waiting for the bulldozers.I really wish they would get on with the dirty job of levelling it and put us out of our misery.I hate seeing the stadium as it is now

Has all the seats been removed ?
The pitch taken up ?
Is it open to just walk around and nosey ?
Can I still book the function room for my 18th birthday party in July ?

I thought someone said we were taking the big red V sign with us to the new ground. Wonder who will have the floodlights.? I know one lower division club are having one of our turnstiles I remember reading that in the press.

I think it's Oldham who are having the turnstiles, isn't it? Is it Oldham who have just recently bought that tiny little 'stadium'? If it is then it's they who are having the turnstiles. But since the big red V sign is still up then I assume it's not going to the new stadium as the keys have been handed over now.

As far as I know, under demolition recycling regs, the bricks will be crushed to be used as hardcore for the new build so I'd loiter by the Crispy Cod and ask a demolition bloke for one. Plus sneaking in tends to be viewed very dimly by the law. ;)

I don't suppose it matters now but would we have been charged rent if we didn't own it and would probaby have had to maintain it also? It is a shame really that the leaving of KR/moving into new stadium hasn't gone hand in hand. It will wrankle with with me slightly if KR does stand for the rest of this season as I personally would have stayed if possible however having been to Widnes today there will be a lot who would prefer it for a season I imagine.

Would not surprise me in the least. House builders have land banks(Morrison aka gallifordtry who are doing the bridge to the ground have nearly 4000plots yet to build estates on) Which is basically as it states. They just purchase land and develop it when convenient and prices to sell are best. KR may well be dropped and the land stay undeveloped for a while. I think the hype the ground may make it happen sooner than later but I would think a slow build would happen. The current housing Market is dire with the uncertainty of jobs etc.

I heard somewhere that it was costing over £250,000 a year just to keep up with safety standards.

No point throwing good money after bad and I bet moving to Widnes gives us more in Corporate money (and therefore more total income) than KR did.

Maybe that is why the floodlights are on there tonight. A handing over the key ceremony has taken place and we didn't know!

I'd put it down to insurance and blame culture if there is an accident within the grounds. Last thing saints need is a claim for injury whilst somebody is lending a piece of concrete to put the rest of the bought seat together:)

Where does it say ready in Feb 2011? It says coming soon - February 2011. All that means is the sales office will be opening in February: a portakabin next to Dunriding Lane.

Just looking at the latest pictures of the old girl, and being down on the south coast this is all I can do, just had a thought. Now call me old fashioned, but when I was a lad (back in the 70's) my grandad had me out cutting the grass, weeeding his paths etc. every few weeks. The latest pictures of the ground aprt from the obvious concrete decay and general old age of the premises, the greenery is remarkably subdued! You had a really harsh one up ther or something or do weeds etc stop growing in town during the winter? Would love to be there to stand outside the ground, close my eyes and remember......Running out as a schoolboy, scoring a couple of trys in lancashire schools games, and going for 'trials' like every other schoolboy in the town. God bless her, always remember, always miss. :(

That's quite a special photo. Having been lucky enough to play a few games at Knowsley Road that was the view of the ground that you got coming out of the changing rooms and walking up the tunnel. Just a chink of light from afar and the partial view of the Eddy End until you came out of the entrance and the ground opened up before you. Love it, makes the hairs on the neck stand on end.

I went up before, parked up near the away end, I knew straight away I was on a hiding to nothing as there were loads of portakabins and lorries on site. I asked the security guard anyway, and he very politely said I can't go in because of health and safety reasons.

Lot of equipment on site now, I'd be surprised if work isn't about to start any day now to be honest. I hope so anyway. She looked sad, miserable and lonely. Put her out of her misery.

Mineshafts?! If there were any there I would have thought they'd have been capped a long time ago. They look like borehole rigs for site investigation work. They take soil reports down to fairly deep levels to find out what type of ground it is, how dense etc. They'll do several boreholes all over the site once the rest has been cleared. Normal practice before all construction work on unknown sites in order to selcet the type of foundation needed.
Drove past last night but too dark to see clearly. Good pictures though, but very sad.

Nope. Went up myself and took some pics about an hour or so ago and it would seem my informants misinformed me! They weren't half digging up where the big screen used to be. Digging is also starting on the Knowsley Road side. No idea why they are digging holes there, unless to simply release the concrete, but they are. I would imagine within the next fortnight a lot of the place will be down. There is an awful lot of activity going on at the Dunriding Lane end.

The main stand will be coming down within the next week. (http://www.sthelensstar.co.uk/news/8863296.Demolition_begins_at_Knowsley_Road/?ref=rss&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter) Apparently it is going to be dismantled and recycled so there won't be a wrecking ball job. The concrete is going to be used as hardcore, as on our new site.

I thought I heard noises in the main stand when I walked past earlier and it would seem the builders were ripping out the seats. They have also started digging up the pitch to make space for the machinery.

I have read somewhere too that there used to be mine workings in that area.

PLenty of them. I own a flat at the side of the black bull, bought it before it was built, due to take aroudn 12 months to complete, and it took about 2 years or more as they found a ruddy huge mine shaft that took a fair auld while to fill in.... didnt bothe rme like as the price I bought the flat for was a lot less than what they sold them for when the development was done... some big holes in that area though.

Was over on Saturday from Yorkshire and drove down Dunriding Lane to have a look; very sad to see the demolition but although Knowsley Rd had character in spades, she had got shabby and run down and was no longer up to the job.

I only hope that the new Saints stadium has some sense of individuality about it and isn't just another identikit modern football stadium.

Was talking to a guy from Taylor Wimpey the other day and he said the Hattons Stand should be the first to come down. They expect to take about 3-4 months to pull all of KR down as they're trying to recycle as much of it as possible. Crushing the concrete for hardcore and saving as much of the steel as they can.

I went past earlier today and there's no visible sign of any more of the ground having been pulled down, i'll go up in the next few days and take more pictures if it looks like more has been demolished

well that was the obvious thing to me, i can only presume it was in the contract that metal etc is kept, but you'd have thought that saints could have auctioned say about 20 of them, there must be a couple of hundred at the stadium..

i just think there's tons of stuff that could have been auctioned.. even down to the pegs in the old dressing rooms, you really could go on.. i just got the impression the club couldn't be bothered employing someone to take all the stuff down, but i really think they could've made a bit of money if it'd been done proper..

sadly we'll never know

Bizzarely there is loads of stuff. I bought the "Gym Entrance" sign in the first auction and picked it up from KR. When I went the marketing manager took me into a room which had loads of stuff that was to be auctioned off. Loads of pictures, shirts signs etc they have just never appeared on the auction site - and when they did there were ridiculous prices on it. The club were originally producing a catalogue and holding a proper auction - they would have made a fortune if they had done that before christmas - now with the season upon us I dont know who will have the appetite to buy an item of KR history. Equally I hope the club will sell some of the bricks from the old ground coz I want one.

Not exactly rocket science is it! As you rightly say, there must be all sorts of wierd and wonderful bits they could have sold off on ebay.

I looked a while ago and both Wire and Leeds have proper club auctions on ebay, Wire were using it more for online retailing whereas the Rhinos seem to use it more for auctioning off worn player jumpers/ jersies.

Could they not get some local schoolkids in on work experience to help out with the listings?

Yep, I felt exactly the same. If we'd have lost to Warrington at Knowsley Road I think I'd have actually cried, but Friday's game felt a bit surreal. It was like I wasn't even watching my team play at times. Even though KR was a dive, the soul of the place made it feel homely. Widnes certainly won't feel that way and the new stadium will take some getting used to.

Are you male or female? And did you have a black camera with a zoom lens? I'm not stalking you; just trying to figure out whether you were one of the two people I chatted with at the site today!

Not stalking yet noticed lens size eh. Why didn't you ask are you one of our resident redvee photographers. Some great but sad shots there though.

Well, one was female, the other male, and both had zoom lenses! Er ...!

Neither was me, although I'm guessing you might have seen the same 2 people there that I did. The man was Alex Service (club historian) and a woman with blonde hair who both had cameras the same as those you described

Truly depressing photos there. The worst will be when they pull the Popular Side down and the Pavilion down o_O

Yes. The woman turned up while I was chatting to Alex Service. In my pictures, the roof is not as cleanly demolished as in your pictures. They were still ripping down the middle bit when I was there. I wouldn't be surprised if the roof had been entirely dismantled by the end of today.

Well the length of time it's taken them so far, it'll probably take them to the end of the week rather than today. Then the likelihood is they'll start taking the rest of that stand down some time next week.
It's good to see other Saints fans there taking pictures too

If you think it's sad looking at the pictures we've posted on here, then wait until you see the pictures taken by Bernard Platt from INSIDE the ground. I was looking on Twitter and the link is on there on the St Helens Star twitter page

Me too - be advised - don't look if you don't want to feel gutted beyond belief.

Think I will stop coming in this thread now and remember the old girl from my youth and from the times with my dearly departed dad on there.

Just had a look whilst picking up the chippy tea. The main stand is now completely demolished half way down to the fixture board, giving a view into the stadium. Bizarre sight :(

Nick Brookes demolition is Cheshire from memory so more possibly a wolf who would be more determined I think in destroying the place.

Must have been done late on because I drove past at 2.20 this afternoon and the whole of the back wall was still standing, although almost all of the roof had gone

Sorry poor description, yes the stand was demolished floor to roof, up to a point level with the fixture board. Approximately half it's length. It was late on, around 5 ish.
